National Inauguration of the International Year of Glass

The United Nations has declared 2022 the International Year of Glass and VICRILA has joined this important recognition by attending the national inauguration of this declaration that the sector has organised at the Botanical Garden in Madrid.
The United Nations wanted to highlight that “glass has accompanied humanity for centuries, enriching the quality of life of millions of people as one of the most important, versatile and transformative materials in history”. A statement that can be endorsed with data, such as those contained in the Circular Economy Report of the Spanish Glass Industry (ANFEVI, FAVIPLA and FAOVI) 2020-2021, which was released at the presentation of the International Year of Glass (IYOG 2022).
So In 2021 alone, 3.8 million tonnes of glass were manufactured in Spain, a sector that has reduced its emissions per tonne by more than 11% between 2014 and last year. In addition, glass is one of the most circular materials currently on the market as it uses less raw material by introducing waste into the process and is fully recyclable.
Furthermore, the European glass industry is an innovative and strategically valuable sector from which the European Union benefits greatly. Glass products are indispensable not only for the transition towards a circular and climate-neutral economy, but also for achieving the digital revolution in Europe. From Vicrila, the Basque glassmaker with more than 130 years of history, we will continue to support glass and the industrial sector it represents as a source of wealth, well-being and quality of life.
